FIX Google Hangouts NO notification problem.

This is what I did:

  1. Go into Hangouts > Settings > [Your Account] > Hangout messages & invites.
  2. Unselect “Notifications”.
  3. Select again “Notifications”.
  4. Click on “Sound”.
  5. Select a random sound (whatever one) and click OK.
  6. Click again on “Sound”.
  7. Select the sound you would like (ex:Hangout Message) and click OK.
  8. Go back and do the same for “Video Calls”.

Now get completely out of the app and ask someone to send you a test chat.
Just for the sake of testing, be sure to close all other instances of Hangouts, like for example on a PC of web browser, just for this time to simplify debuging.

Once you start receiving again these glorious Hangouts notifications, fire up your PC and check if you receive them everywhere without issues.

PS: IT seems you might have to repeat this procedure everytime you update Google Hangouts app, until some nice googler fixes it.

Just tried this because no matter what I have won’t get alerts from my wife. After I tried this solution, it still didn’t work.

I dont know what to do, this is super annoying.

I have the same issue. Seems to only affect messages from my wife (who is the only person I really care about getting notifications from…). Super annoying.

It didn’t work for me either. I was super hopefull. It is so annoying and frustrating. Like you it seems that only my main person I talk to is who I don’t get the notification. I’m on a Samsung so I don’t think I can fully Uninstall. I can force stop?

I wonder if it’s something with the volume of chat history with that person? I’m nervous to clear cache or clear data but I could try that.

Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated.

Its only from my main person I communicate with (my wife). However earlier last week I got sporadic messages from here, no rhyme or reason, but I got alerted of a handful, and just as quick as that happened, I went back to not getting any from here again.

I deleted our conversation and cleared cache, still no luck.

Do you or your wife by any chance have been using it with iPhone/ipad before or switching between them?
From what I read searching on the net, it seems there’s some kind of issue with that scenario.

No, we have only ever had Android devices. We are currently both using Nexus 5’s, both stock and both unrooted on 5.0.x.

I had the same problem, but the fix didn’t work. I ended up uninstalling and then reinstalling Hangouts and then notifications started working again.

Just wanted to say that you’re a piece of crap for pestering me about adblock while simultaneously putting your tiny article on two pages to generate more ad revenue. You’re the exact reason WHY people run adblock.

    • CeKMTL says:

First of all I would like to thank you for such an educated and eye opening comment.
The ads, that you never saw, are 3 in total and in no way inside the article.
It should take less than 1 second for a normal human being to dismiss that “pestering adblock notice”.
Thanks to people like you, the adblock is close to 90% and most of that is from the US.
I can sense from the anger and rage of your post (you took the time to express yourself exquisitely in written form) that you must be one of those people in search of a quick hit that expects everything for free and must go bananas if you have to pay for something.

Oh yeah, “generate more ad revenue”… well, I “generate” about 10-35c (of a dollar) per day so… yeah… I’m filthy rich yeah! 😀

Finally, “Did you try turning it off and on?” actually worked for once. Fixed my issue, thanks. I also have a heavily modded/rooted phone and was worried I broke something, too. Turns out Hangouts is just buggy :p
